How Big Does Your Portable Solar Panel Need To Be?

As a rough guide, when running an efficient car fridge, you would need about 1 watt per liter of fridge. That translates into an 80 Watt panel for an 80lt fridge.
If you were going to use the fridge in its freezer mode, the fridge will use twice as much power. This means you will need an 80watt panel for a 40lt freezer or a 120watt panel for an 60lt freezer.
If you need lighting at night, then you will need to add to the size of the panel.
Spending extra money on an efficient fridge or LED lighting can save you money on the size of your Solar Panel.

80Watt or 120watt Portable Fold-Up Solar Panel
A convenient alternative energy solution for those on the move. Fold it away and store it in the carry bag when not in use, then when you set up camp just fold it out so your batteries are being charged. A stand is included so you can position the panel for optimum solar capture.

Features a waterproof PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) voltage regulator so you can connect directly to your battery without fear of over-charging the battery. Being waterproof you do not need to worry about the rain, moisture or dust in sensitive electronics. They can be left outside overnight and in the rain.

Two power cables are included. A 7m cable with 50 Amp Anderson style plugs at both ends and a 3m cable with alligator clamp battery connections at one end and a 50 Amp Anderson style plug at the other end. This gives a total of 10 meters of cable with flexibility to connect into an existing Anderson plug or to connect direct to the battery. The cables are heavy duty to reduce voltage loss, as well as being flexible and round so that they can be packed and stored easily. Standard heavy duty “car cable” does not pack easily!

The portable panels are supplied with a durable, padded, nylon carry bag.  Excellent for camping, 4WD, boating etc.

Take advantage of the clean and unlimited power of the sun and save on energy bills with these great recreational solar package deals! Our monocrystalline solar panels are far more efficient than polycrystalline, and are built strong and tough to endure the harshest environments. Get just the panel or available as a package.

Why have a regulator?
Regulators manage the power, both voltage and current, from the solar panel so that the battery receives the correct charge. Without a regulator, an expensive battery would be permanently damaged. 80 Watt panels need a 6 amp regulator. If you have more than one panel or larger panels, you will need a larger regulator. The 5 watt Solar panels do not need a regulator when charging car batteries, as they do not produce enough current to cause  overcharging.

What Type of Regulator
PWM or MPPT ?
Our portable solar panels are supplied with the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) regulators and not the MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) regulators. Although MPPT regulators are more efficient and thus the preferred choice of voltage control for big solar power installations, (ie House roof) they are less efficient than the PWM regulator when it comes to smaller systems. Although we have tried and tested the MPPT regulators, wishing for that extra 'free' 20%, we have three reasons for not using them on our portable solar panels;
1)      They are not as efficiently as the PWM on small panels because of the extra conversion that they do. Approx 5% less efficient at 4 amps.
2)       As yet, they are not available in a fully water proof style. Therefore cannot be left out in the rain or dust.
3)       They are more expensive than PWM regulators.
